Room 2 ~ Columns, remains of columns of the Bais Hamikdash

Exhibit 2a- A column and it's capital (crown) from the Bais HaMikdash. The columns of the Bais HaMikdash were thrown off Har HaBayis by the invaders and remained buried until recent years.

Exhibit 2b- A capital from the Bais HaMikdash. The style of architecture in the Second Bais HaMikdash was called Roman Corinthian. This is a Roman Corinthian capital that was in the Bais HaMikdash.

Exhibit 2c- The interior of the El Aksa Mosque. The mosque is located along the southern part of Har HaBayis. Some of the remains of the Bais HaMikdash were used in its construction. (See Room 18.)

Exhibit 2d- Inside the Mercy Gate, The only building that remains from the Bais HaMikdash is the Mercy Gate, or Shar HaRachamim. (See Room 38.) It is built on the Eastern Wall of Har HaBayis. Some of the columns found today inside the Mercy Gate are remains of the Bais HaMikdash.

Exhibit 2e- Inside the Chuldah Tunnel. Under the Har HaBayis is the Chuldah Tunnel. This was used as the main entrance and exit of the Temple. This 100 year old photo shows a Corinthian column still in the tunnel. (See Rooms 32, 33, & 45.)

Exhibit 2f- the oldest remaining column. Most of the remaining columns we have today are from Hordus' rebuilt Bais HaMikdash, around 2000 years ago. In the Chuldah Tunnel is a column from the time of Ezra, 2,350 years ago. This is an accurate drawing made in the later part of the nineteenth century.
