At CSCI we choose our
staff very carefully: We hire people who love kids and know how to support kids to have
terrific time and feel great about themselves. Our counselors are known for their
sensitivity and their caring.
We make sure of that - with a
full week of staff training before camp. Most of our staff already have a kit bag full of
tools for giving campers what they need. At pre-camp training we teach them all Active
Listening and how to help kids mediate their conflicts with Peacemaking.
To be hired, our staff
must have a current Bronze Medallion Lifesaving award (or U.S. equivalent) and current
first aid qualifications (or pull).
A camp, like any other
institution, is only as good as its people. Our counselors, many of whom are former CSCI
campers, are chosen with the utmost care through personal interviews and extensive
reference checking. All are of Amuka age or older, and many return for years on end.
We select a congenial, fun-loving group of counselors and
ancillary staff, but mature and dedicated leadership remains the top priority. Each year,
CSCI spends a great deal more time and expense on counselor recruitment than on camper
promotions!
